Why Frequency and Wavelength Are Two Views of the Exact Same Wave
Frequency and wavelength describe the same physical wave, whether light or sound, from two different angles, frequency counting how many complete wave cycles pass a fixed point every second, and wavelength measuring the physical distance between one wave crest and the next, and because both quantities describe the same wave travelling at a fixed speed, they’re connected through a simple, elegant inverse relationship, wave speed equals frequency multiplied by wavelength, meaning a higher frequency wave necessarily has a proportionally shorter wavelength, and vice versa, for any wave travelling at a given fixed speed. For light specifically, this relationship is exactly why visible colour and light frequency describe the same underlying property, since red light has a longer wavelength and correspondingly lower frequency than blue light, which has a shorter wavelength and higher frequency, both travelling at the same constant speed of light, and this identical inverse relationship applies equally to sound, where a higher-frequency, higher-pitched sound has a correspondingly shorter wavelength than a lower-frequency, lower-pitched sound travelling through the same medium at the same speed, which is exactly why bass frequencies, with their considerably longer wavelengths, are so much harder to block or absorb acoustically than higher-frequency sound.
