Conductance Is Simply Resistance Turned Upside Down
Electric conductance measures exactly the same underlying property as electric resistance, but expressed as its mathematical inverse, how easily current flows rather than how strongly it’s opposed, meaning a material or component with very high resistance automatically has very low conductance and vice versa, since the two are reciprocals of one another by definition. The siemens, the SI unit of conductance, is defined directly as the inverse of the ohm, meaning a component with a resistance of one ohm has a conductance of exactly one siemens, and this inverted framing is specifically preferred in certain engineering contexts, particularly when analyzing circuits with multiple components connected in parallel, since parallel conductance values simply add together directly, a considerably more convenient calculation than the reciprocal-sum formula required when working with parallel resistance values instead, which is exactly why some circuit analysis techniques deliberately work in conductance terms specifically to sidestep that more cumbersome reciprocal arithmetic.
