Magnetic Flux Measures the Total Field Passing Through a Surface

Magnetic flux measures the total amount of magnetic field passing through a given surface or loop, and it’s precisely this quantity, and more specifically its rate of change over time, that generates electric voltage in a coil through electromagnetic induction, the fundamental physical principle behind how generators, transformers, and countless other electrical devices actually work, since a changing magnetic flux through a coil of wire is exactly what induces a voltage across that coil’s terminals in the first place. The weber, the SI unit, is directly defined through this induction relationship, specifically as the amount of flux that, when reduced steadily to zero over one second, induces exactly one volt in a single-turn coil, tying the unit definition directly back to the practical electromagnetic behaviour it’s meant to describe rather than existing as an arbitrary abstract label. The maxwell, an older centimetre-gram-second unit representing a considerably smaller quantity of flux than the weber, remains present in some legacy specifications and older technical literature, following the same historical-unit-survival pattern seen with the gilbert and oersted elsewhere across the magnetic unit converters on this list.
