Conductivity Completes the Inverse Pairing With Resistivity

Electric conductivity holds exactly the same inverse relationship to electrical resistivity that conductance holds to resistance, measuring a material’s inherent ability to conduct current, independent of its shape, as opposed to resistivity, which measures the material’s inherent opposition to conducting current, meaning conductivity and resistivity are reciprocals of each other in precisely the same way conductance and resistance are, just applied to the material-property version rather than the shape-dependent component version. Materials are frequently ranked and compared by their conductivity value directly, since a higher conductivity figure intuitively communicates “conducts electricity well,” which is arguably a more immediately readable framing for comparing conductor materials than the equivalent resistivity figures, which require remembering that a lower resistivity number means better conduction, an inverted relationship that’s easy to get backwards in casual comparison. This is exactly why materials science and electrical engineering literature often present conductivity and resistivity side by side or interchangeably, depending on which framing better suits the specific comparison or calculation being made at that moment.
